do it ghetto style and use a cereal box. good size and great weight(not likr weight, but like thickness) thats how i make mine. and i use an x-acto knife with #11 blades. aqlthough last stencil i made i used a plexi glass cutter

 

Havoc's got the right idea. I'll elaborate a bit.

Manilla folders. It's the same idea as a cereal box... except I don't eat ceral so I dont have them lying around. That's what I'd recommend starting with. Once you get better you can go with acetate/mylar(for things I want to last). Acetate and mylar are expensive and the latter is not easily acquired without money so it's best to stick to paper based stuff when you start. I also find it much easier to cut than mylar and acetate.

X-acto knives are pretty much the standard, but sometimes a scapel is a nice change. If you do use an X-acto, use one of the those rubber pencil pads. It's a lot nicer to your fingers.

Stencilrevolution[http://stencilrevolution.com] is really the place you want to be for stencils. Check out their forum. There are a bunch of tutorials(not so helpful in my opinion), but a lot of useful threads on concealing and such. Personally, I'd say stay away from the google/photoshop combo. Try to draw your own stuff or at least use your own photos. My workflow for photos these days is like this: take a photo, photoshop for contrast adjustments-> print-> draw on over the contrast adjustment to layout my stencil-> scan my stencil concept->convert to a vector-> print final-> cut.
